Oral Health Benefits of Eating A Rainbow of Produce Each Day

Maybe you’ve heard that you should eat a rainbow of produce every day, but did you know that in addition to the health benefits for your body it’s also important for your oral health?

Red

Apples are nature’s toothbrush! You’ve heard the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, well it also keeps the plaque at bay! Not only does the fiber in an apple help clean your teeth, they also fight bad breath. They scrub away plaque and debris and the acidity of an apple helps kill the bad bacteria that causes bad breath.

Orange

Carrots are full of fiber and help keep teeth clean by scrubbing the plaque off as you eat. They stimulate saliva production, which naturally cleans your teeth by rinsing your mouth as you eat. Additionally, carrots are full of B vitamins, which are key in fighting gingivitis.

Yellow

Some fruits naturally cleanse and whiten as well! Pineapple can help whiten teeth due to the fact that they contain the enzyme bromelain, which acts as a natural stain remover.

Green

Leafy greens like kale and spinach are rich in calcium which is great for strengthening your teeth and B vitamins which help fight gum disease.

Blue

Everyone knows that blueberries are full of antioxidants and are a great addition to your diet, but did you know that the polyphenols in these powerful little berries are helpful in fighting gum disease? Blueberries help prevent the formation of plaque and help prevent periodontal disease.

Purple

Purple cabbage is full of fiber and vitamins. It’s packed with vitamins A, C and K as well as a healthy amount of calcium and magnesium. Great for building strong teeth!
